What happens

Six women take their seats on a set built to look like the Midway Ice Castles, and the first order of business is the chair that stays empty. Andy Cohen confirms Mary Cosby chose not to attend. She had heard what her castmates were saying about her church behind her back all season, he explains, and one word in particular — Whitney Rose’s “predator” — had landed hard. He had encouraged her to come and defend her church; she stayed home. The news blindsides the couch: even Meredith Marks, Mary’s closest ally, had not been told.

Jen Shah gets the floor first. The charges hanging over her — conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, arising from an alleged telemarketing scheme — carry up to fifty years combined. Jen restates her position: not guilty, innocence maintained, and attendance against her legal team’s advice. The talk rewinds through her apology tour — the “Shrek” and “manatee” digs at Heather Gay, the liked tweets about Brooks Marks — before Meredith surprises the room by apologising to Jen herself. Through tears, she explains that her season-long hostility had private fuel: her father’s death, and a fight with her sister she could not lay out because it was not her story to tell. Jen, disarmed, says she could see some of her own Season 1 self in Meredith.

The détente lasts minutes. Heather converts her reconciliation with Jen into an attack on Lisa Barlow — the LEGO figurine comparison, the Angie Harrington friendship, the hot mic — and calls Lisa a caricature out of a teen magazine: “how to be a cool mean girl.” Then comes the Jennie Nguyen segment, played under an on-screen statement that the taping predates the discovery of her Facebook posts and her dismissal. Jennie answers for Mary’s season of remarks about her. Meredith is pressed on the passes she gave Mary over those remarks, and counters that Jennie had been attacking her since the ice-fishing trip, where the newcomer claimed a prior acquaintance Meredith says never existed. She denies performing an accent, and repeats that the glass she threw at the finale was aimed at the floor. Andy closes the segment by relaying what Mary told him by phone: that Black people aren’t capable of racism. Jennie replies that everyone is capable of it.

The rest of the hour orbits Lisa. Asked who the group’s biggest pot-stirrer is, every hand rises except Jennie’s — Meredith’s included. Lisa defends the catering saga with printed text messages, among them one in which Angie asked the caterers not to tell her, and concedes to nothing worse than snark. Heather warns she keeps a vault of dirt on Lisa; Lisa fires back with Heather’s DUI. During a break, Lisa apologises to Meredith for the hot-mic rant — seen by Meredith for the first time only shortly before taping — and finds the wound too fresh for forgiveness. Part 1 ends on Lisa and Jen: the Fresh Wolf event where Jen was snubbed, a phone call that left Lisa in tears in front of her son Henry, and her insistence that she kept the friendship because, controversially, she loved Jen. Jen snaps that she is tired of the disclaimers attached to loving her.

How it originated

The reunion was taped in January 2022, at the season’s emotional maximum. The cast had screened the final episodes, the hot-mic rant included, only hours before sitting down, which is why so little on that stage has cooled. Mary’s no-show was covered at the time as something close to a resignation — ET reported she had effectively quit the series — and she did not return for Season 3. Her own explanation, offered in comments reported afterwards, was that she expected a one-sided conversation.

The Jennie timeline bent the episode’s meaning between taping and broadcast. The reunion was filmed before her deleted 2020 Facebook posts resurfaced in mid-January 2022; she apologised for them on 19 January, and on 25 January Bravo announced it had ceased filming with her. By the 27 February airdate, the woman on the couch had already been dismissed — hence the statement Bravo placed at the top of the episode. The full record is covered in this series’ E14 and E15 installments.

The human interaction (Analysis)

Two absences structure the hour, though only one chair is empty. Mary, the season’s most accused woman, declines the one proceeding designed to accuse her to her face — and thereby controls it. Every topic routes back to her: the church, the remarks, the friendship with Meredith nobody can make sense of. The group can rehearse its verdicts but not deliver one, because a verdict needs its defendant. Her non-appearance becomes the loudest testimony at the reunion; the others are left performing outrage at a cushion.

The reachable defendant is Lisa. The season’s switchboard — the woman who carried messages between camps all year — discovers that at a reunion, centrality gets reclassified as stirring the pot. Hands go up. The charges against her are not invented; they are selective, and everyone on that couch knows the selection is the punishment. Grief works the opposite trade: Meredith’s disclosure about her father and her sister rewrites her entire season in a few sentences. A reunion’s real currency is new information, released when it does the most work.

And over the Jennie segment hangs the airdate. Viewers on 27 February watched her prosecute Mary’s racism — on the record the season genuinely built — knowing Bravo had already dismissed her for anti-Black posts of her own, which had not yet surfaced when she said the words. The disclaimer turns the segment into a double document: a real grievance, voiced by a messenger whose own record had just caught up with her. Neither fact cancels the other. The reunion keeps both.

What people made of it

Audiences scored it like a comedown from the Zion peak. EpisodeHive’s IMDb mirror gives it 7.6 out of 10 from 37 votes — level with the finale, toward the season’s lower end — and Nielsen counted 0.64 million viewers, up slightly from the finale’s 0.60 million but below the season’s 0.71 million average.

Reality Tea framed the hour as the Lisa pile-on, taking its headline from Heather’s caricature line, and argued that Jennie’s and Mary’s wrongs did not cancel each other out. Salt Lake Magazine called Lisa the reunion’s undisputed center of gravity and admitted to leaving with some sympathy for her; it named Meredith’s the most sympathetic appearance of the cast, praised Cohen’s hand on the wheel, and found the Jennie segment cringeworthy to watch with hindsight. TheThings called Part 1 a rollercoaster, dwelling on Meredith’s breakdown and the Heather–Lisa flare-up. The episode’s Reddit and Primetimer threads and official-clip comments from February 2022 could not be retrieved; this survey rests on the ratings, the audience figures and the published recaps and reviews.
