About Evolving Humanities

A cultural publication for a changing world.

Evolving Humanities is a growing, volunteer-led publication about culture, ideas and public life. We follow the questions that connect the news to the way people actually live.

Why we are here

A public library, a television programme, an old building and a new technology can each tell us something about the society around them. They reveal who has access, whose experiences receive attention and how people make sense of change. Those connections are the starting point for Evolving Humanities.

We bring current affairs into conversation with history, the arts and everyday experience. A story might begin with a research finding, a cultural argument, a community project or an experience someone wants to share. We want readers to leave with a better understanding of the subject and a reason to keep asking questions.

The stories we make room for

Our coverage includes news and explainers alongside cultural criticism, essays and reviews. We are interested in the institutions that shape public life, the work people create, the places they inhabit and the ideas they use to explain the world. Popular culture belongs in that conversation too: entertainment can reveal assumptions about identity, money, belonging and power.

Some subjects need a close reading of the evidence. Others need room for a person to describe what happened to them. We aim to make clear which kind of account a reader is encountering, where the information comes from and what remains uncertain.

A publication taking shape

Evolving Humanities is being built with volunteers and contributors who help with writing, research, editing and the practical work of publishing. Some choose a public byline; others contribute behind the scenes. As the team grows, we will introduce writers and explain their roles, with biographies and photographs shared by agreement.

We currently work with A Great Archie as our agency partner while developing the initiative and working toward an independent nonprofit structure. Our nonprofit information page explains the current arrangements, including the role of Remote and Holding. A nonprofit purpose should be accompanied by clear information about who is responsible for the work.

For readers who want a wider view

You do not need a humanities degree to read us or a public profile to bring us a useful story. We welcome readers, researchers, artists, educators and people with firsthand knowledge of their communities. Expertise matters, and so does the patience to explain a subject without assuming everyone already knows its language.

Our editorial standards set out the approach we expect from everyone who contributes. Readers can question our work, point out an error or suggest a subject that deserves attention.

Start a conversation

If there is a cultural question you keep returning to, an overlooked story in your community or a subject you would like to explore with us, please write. Tell us what you have noticed, why it matters and what you would bring to the discussion. You can send a story proposal, introduce yourself as a contributor or simply get in touch.
