Doha gets a fashion retrospective with a proper archive behind it today. The ERDEM exhibition Doha M7 is presenting, titled About Time, About Her, opens on Tuesday, 27 October 2026 and runs through 26 December 2026, Qatar Museums announced (GlobeNewswire). It brings together more than 150 pieces — garments, sketches, personal ephemera and atelier materials — and it is billed by the organisers as the first exhibition devoted to designer Erdem Moralioglu’s creative journey (Antique Collecting). Time Out Doha lists the run at M7 in Msheireb Downtown, with hours of Saturday to Thursday 11am–9pm and Friday 3.30pm–9pm (Time Out Doha).
Information verified through 27 October 2026.
Inside the ERDEM exhibition Doha M7 visitors will walk through
Five chapters. No single runway parade of greatest hits.
The first, The Human Hand: In the Atelier, starts with how the work gets made: early sketches, college work, personal objects and atelier materials from Moralioglu’s formative years (GlobeNewswire). Typologies: ERDEM Codes examines the recurring visual language that has built up across twenty years of collections. Objects of Affection is the Doha-specific gamble — garments set in dialogue with paintings, sculpture and decorative arts from the Museum of Islamic Art’s collection (QNA via Fana News).
The Muse gathers the lives that have fed the collections: the Duchess of Devonshire, Maria Callas, Margot Fonteyn, Marianne North and Hélène Smith, plus one very specific evening — the 1958 meeting between Queen Elizabeth II and Duke Ellington (GlobeNewswire). The last chapter, The Imaginary Conversation, turns to ERDEM’s Autumn/Winter 2026 anniversary collection, so the retrospective ends in the present tense rather than in a glass case (Antique Collecting).
The exhibition is curated by Olivier Gabet, director of the objets d’art department at the Musée du Louvre, with exhibition design by P. Joseph and immersive installation design by Robin Brown (GlobeNewswire).
An Erdem Moralioglu retrospective built on the 20th anniversary
Moralioglu founded ERDEM in London in 2005. He was born in Montreal to a Turkish father and a British mother, and the show is organised as part of the Qatar Canada and Mexico 2026 Year of Culture — a neat fit for a designer whose biography already crosses those borders (GlobeNewswire).
“I have always been fascinated by the capacity of clothing to hold the trace of a person, a place or a moment in time,” Moralioglu said in the announcement. “Bringing together a 20-year body of work, this exhibition reflects the lives, narratives and encounters that have shaped an evolving language” (GlobeNewswire).
Gabet’s framing goes a step further. Over twenty years, he said, Moralioglu “has constructed an imaginative world in which history is never fixed, beauty is never innocent, and the past is continually transformed by the present,” and he called the Doha show “not simply a retrospective, but a portrait of an imagination in motion” (GlobeNewswire). M7’s director, Maha Al Sulaiti, said the show gives audiences a rare chance to engage closely with the thinking behind a globally recognised fashion house, and to show emerging designers how a distinctive creative identity can be developed over time (QNA via Fana News).
Why this M7 Doha fashion exhibition in October 2026 fits the building
M7 has done this before, and at scale. Antique Collecting notes that the venue’s inaugural exhibition was Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams, followed by Forever Valentino, which ran from October 2022 to April 2023 with more than 200 couture and ready-to-wear pieces (Antique Collecting). Qatar Museums describes M7 as the country’s hub for innovation and entrepreneurship in fashion, design and technology, and the ERDEM show opens during the Qatar Creates Fall/Winter 2026–27 season (GlobeNewswire).
The Year of Culture framing is not decoration either. Qatar Museums says its Years of Culture initiative, chaired by Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, builds long-lasting cultural partnerships between Qatar and other nations, with programmes spanning heritage, creative industries and innovation (GlobeNewswire). The 2026 edition links Qatar with Canada and Mexico. Moralioglu, born in Montreal, gives that pairing a human face: a Canadian-born, London-based designer with a Turkish father and a British mother, showing in Doha. Through new scholarship on Qatar Museums’ collections, the organisers say, the exhibition is meant to show how creative practice can build lasting cultural understanding across borders (QNA via Fana News).
Analysis: the pairing with the Museum of Islamic Art is what lifts this above a touring brand retrospective. A dress next to a decorative object has to argue for itself — shared pattern, shared craft, shared idea of ornament — in a way a dress on a plinth never does. If Objects of Affection works, visitors will leave thinking about making, not logos. And there is a quieter point in the timing: twenty years is early for a retrospective, which is exactly why this one can end with a current collection and a designer still mid-argument with his own archive, rather than as a monument to a finished career.
