What happens

The episode opens with Heather meeting Lisa and Meredith at a Park City spa. Heather recounts her disastrous conversation with Bronwyn: she had expected a chance to repair their friendship and instead felt pressured to apologize before receiving an invitation to Palm Springs. Lisa and Meredith question Bronwyn’s approach; Heather says she left because the discussion was going nowhere. Meredith is also dealing with tension involving Angie’s husband Shawn, who criticized her treatment of her son Brooks during a podcast appearance. Meanwhile, Bronwyn prepares for the anniversary trip at home, wearing matching pajamas with three of her dogs. Her husband Todd is returning from Korea, and by phone he makes clear he doesn’t want to spend the weekend listening to arguments. Bronwyn explains that Mary won’t attend; Heather is absent after their failed reconciliation, and Britani isn’t included in the couples’ getaway. Lisa and John prepare separately — Lisa maintains that Justin Rose owes her an apology for their confrontation at Angie’s anniversary party.

Bronwyn has chartered an enormous private jet, which she introduces with a playful flight-attendant announcement about the group’s emotional baggage. The humor doesn’t disguise the discomfort. During the flight, Bronwyn tries to explain her disagreement with Heather to Lisa and Meredith; neither immediately accepts her interpretation, and Bronwyn feels her longtime friend Lisa is refusing to consider her perspective. On arrival, the guests split into different vehicles — Lisa, John, Meredith and Seth together, Bronwyn with Whitney and Angie — and the division continues at the vacation property, a lavish residence reportedly costing $20,000 per night. Meredith and Lisa settle into rooms away from the other women while Seth searches, unsuccessfully, for a bathtub for Meredith. Bronwyn reads the separation as her guests taking sides. Whitney privately explains that John still wants Justin to apologize to Lisa; she believes Lisa should apologize to Justin instead. Despite the tension, the couples spend time around the pool, Angie plays volleyball with Shawn, and Bronwyn and Todd meet with a jeweler presenting extravagant anniversary jewelry — a display emphasizing the couple’s wealth and Bronwyn’s enthusiasm for elaborate gifts. Elsewhere, Meredith becomes upset when Seth reveals he needs to leave Palm Springs early for work in Ohio: she had expected the trip to give them time together, and his professional obligations taking priority leaves the disagreement unresolved.

The evening’s central confrontation unfolds around the hot tub. The women gather while the husbands relax nearby; Angie brings Vida Tequila shots, and conversation turns to Heather’s absence. Lisa expresses disappointment that Heather isn’t there. Whitney explains that Bronwyn attempted to reconcile with Heather before the trip but the conversation failed; Lisa questions that explanation. When Bronwyn briefly leaves the group, Lisa FaceTimes Heather so the women can speak with her directly. Bronwyn returns, discovers the call, and is furious that her guests contacted someone she deliberately excluded while staying at a property she’s paying for. Lisa argues Heather remains their friend and that speaking with her shouldn’t be offensive; Bronwyn responds that Lisa has repeatedly dismissed her feelings. Angie also questions the timing, suggesting that contacting Heather during Bronwyn’s celebration is disrespectful. The argument grows louder; Bronwyn becomes emotional and walks away, and Whitney follows to comfort her.

Todd notices his wife’s distress and approaches her privately, reminding her he warned her about letting unnecessary drama dominate their anniversary. He says he won’t spend the weekend arguing and proposes asking Lisa and John to leave. Bronwyn appreciates his willingness to defend her but worries his approach is too severe. Todd nonetheless approaches John and delivers an ultimatum: Lisa must stop fighting, or the couple must leave. John appears surprised. The episode ends before the dispute is resolved, leaving the vacation’s future uncertain.

How it originated

The Palm Springs conflict follows Heather and Bronwyn’s unsuccessful reconciliation in the 30 October episode. Heather believed Bronwyn had made an invitation conditional on receiving an apology; Bronwyn maintained she wanted mutual accountability. As Reality Tea’s November 6 preview documented, Heather interpreted the conversation as an attempt to make her earn an invitation. Their disagreement originated earlier in the season, when Heather accused Bronwyn of criticizing Whitney privately while presenting herself as sympathetic publicly; Bronwyn disputed the accusation. Lisa’s involvement complicates matters because she introduced Bronwyn to the group but has maintained her friendship with Heather. The husbands’ tensions also follow Angie’s anniversary celebration, where Lisa’s confrontation with Whitney expanded into an argument involving John and Justin. Meredith’s marital difficulties are a separate concern — she and Seth had previously discussed the challenges of maintaining their relationship while balancing professional commitments. Bravo’s official episode description identifies both the Palm Springs confrontation and Meredith’s disappointment with Seth as central storylines.

The human interaction (Analysis)

Bronwyn’s vacation reveals the difficulty of separating hospitality from emotional expectations. She’s paying for an extravagant experience and reasonably hopes her guests will respect the occasion — but providing accommodations doesn’t give a host authority over everyone’s friendships. Lisa considers Heather’s exclusion unfair and refuses to pretend their relationship no longer matters; Bronwyn reads Lisa’s decision to contact Heather as a public rejection of their longtime friendship. Both women demand loyalty, and neither agrees on what loyalty requires.

Todd introduces another complication. His desire to protect Bronwyn is understandable, particularly after watching her become upset during their own anniversary celebration, but threatening to remove guests transforms an argument between friends into a confrontation between couples — John now faces pressure to manage Lisa’s behavior even though the original disagreement doesn’t directly involve him. Meredith and Seth’s conflict offers a quieter version of the same mismatch: for Meredith, the vacation is an opportunity for connection; Seth sees his work responsibilities as unavoidable, and neither perspective resolves the disappointment created by their different priorities. The episode’s central tension is between wanting control and wanting genuine relationships. Bronwyn can arrange the location, the transportation and the entertainment, but she cannot determine how her guests feel about one another — and her frustration grows as those limits emerge.

What people made of it

“The Desert and the Deserted” holds an 8.4/10 IMDb user rating from 52 votes, per EpisodeHive’s Season 5 mirror — figures reflecting the listing verified through 18 October 2026, not the rating immediately following broadcast. According to Wikipedia’s Season 5 episode table, the episode attracted 0.35 million U.S. viewers, approximately 350,000 — a modest increase from Episode 7’s 0.34 million.

In Reality Tea’s November 6 recap, Debbie Krencicki emphasized the uncomfortable atmosphere surrounding the trip and Bronwyn’s frustration when Lisa contacted Heather, and highlighted Todd’s refusal to tolerate further arguments and the resulting confrontation with John. Writing for Vulture on November 7, Sarah Hagi gave the episode three stars, criticizing Bronwyn’s controlling approach to the vacation, questioning Todd’s decision to threaten Lisa and John’s departure, and examining how Lisa’s loyalty to Heather exposed Bronwyn’s unrealistic expectations about managing an established friendship group. Their assessments differed particularly over Todd’s intervention: Krencicki treated his frustration sympathetically, while Hagi questioned whether his approach was appropriate for a group vacation.
